In an unusual turn of events, Dean and Sam were sidelined for the major confrontation in the episode, leaving it to Castiel, Balthazar and Fate. On the plus side, the glimpses we have seen of Balthazar and Castiel's working relationship has made me much more curious about the storyline of the civil war in heaven than I was before.

War forces people to make difficult and sometimes ruthless decisions, but Castiel seemed to be ashamed of what he had done, and didn't admit it to Dean and Sam in the end. The revelation that Castiel may have saved the Titanic just so that he would have more souls available for his ongoing battle in heaven is disturbing (and a little convoluted). I loved that Roche delivered the rationalization for Balthazar's actions with such conviction. It was credible because I really believe that if he were bored enough, Balthazar would time travel and avert the sinking of the ship just to avoid having to listen to the Celine Dion Song. The hilarious explanation he gave for rescuing the ship was the best part of the episode. In another welcome return, Sebastian Roche was back as Balthazar, who started all the trouble by going back in time and not letting the Titanic sink. And while it was obvious that at some point the angels would have to go back and let the Titanic sink, I still found myself wishing that they would somehow manage to keep Ellen around. It would have been nice to see Alona Tal again too, but Jo remained off camera.Įllen and Bobby immediately became the heart of the episode when Dean and Sam realized that if history were to be put right, they would lose Ellen (and Jo) again. She was a force to be reckoned with on the show and she is still missed. It was great to have Ferris back, even for a short time. More importantly, Ellen ( Samantha Ferris) and Jo were alive and well, with Ellen happily married to Bobby. The first indication was the car Dean drove, which was not his beloved Impala. Parts of the episode had a 'been there, done that' feel, mostly due to the Rube Goldberg quality of the accidents created by Fate being reminiscent of the rabbit's foot mishaps in Season 3's ' Bad Day At Black Rock.' Add a little of the dark humor from Dean's Groundhog Day-esque multiple deaths in another Season 3 episode, ' Mystery Spot,' shake well, and you get ' My Heart Will Go On.' The show had a little fun with us, choosing not to reveal right away that we were watching an alternate reality.

And just for good measure, they tacked on a little moral quandary at the end. Returning from a six-week hiatus, Supernatural reminded us why the show can be so entertaining, with an episode full of their own brand of offbeat humor and healthy doses of angst and gore.
